    The film is "When Silence Rises from Earth 4:33 More Than Cage Imagined."
    This is an experimental audio recording, a performance film, a visual installation, a community event, and a global collaboration. Most importantly, it is a ceremony for an anti-colonial future. This ceremony was performed in December 2020 at the Dub Museum in Kampala, Uganda by members of IR::Sankara Future Dub Resurgence and three children from Kireka, a nearby neighbourhood. Together, they silently take part in the ritual preparation of a djembe drum.The theme of silence is not new to the work of Indigenous Resistance, but it was uniquely conceived for this project because it was partly inspired by 4’33”, an avant-garde musical composition written by John Cage. 4’33” is a paradoxical piece of music: it requires a musician to perform without touching their instrument. For Cage, the basic idea is to create a moment of silence for four minutes and thirty-three seconds, but the end goal is to foreground the acoustics of the space the musician is situated in and reveal deeper insights into the naure of sound
    spirit.Nevertheless, the premise of 4’33” sparked an imaginative process for everyone directly and indirectly involved with When Silence Rises from Earth. First, there was the exciting prospect of organizing a rare, if not first, performance of 4’33” in Africa. Second, there was the vision of recording the silence of a space as unique as the Dub Museum, one that is completely autonomous from the institutional worlds of
    political parties, NGOs, corporate funding, electronic music festivals, academic universities, and avant-garde art scenes. Third, there was the creative opportunity to radically deviate from Cage’s script and use the four minutes and thirty-three seconds to warm up the skins of the djembes (as is traditionally done before any performance), but also to introduce elements of spoken word in a variety of languages. Lastly, there was an ethical imperative to generate this moment of silence as a form of political action that exceeds the objectives of avant-garde Euro-American art culture, which Cage was affiliated with, or the Buddhist and “Eastern” mystical traditions that inspired him. Standing Rock sometimes we need to start with a stark image of reality so we can feel whats happening in actuality let the story be told withstanding a bitter bitter winter cold water protectors at Standing rock taking stock preparing for government assault rifles attack dogs water cannons stun grenades their arsenal against those protected by sweatlodge ceremonies fueled by ancestral memories 7 generation foresight defending that which is vital at a later date as 176,000 gallons of crude oil seeped from pipelines into a creek poisoning earth water sky protectors concerns were now something no one could deny the events made me reflect on something indigenous elders have said to restore the earth we must start with the natural sites we know are sacred powerful beautiful natural places worthy to be venerated here we find in a manner which staggers the mind the greatest concentration and variety of plants ,wood ,oil ,rare metals , minerals to put it in a context that you can visualise contextualise these sites are like the hearts and livers of this earth they also support indigenous cultures which make them also targets for government and corporate vultures who see them as a source of immense profit sacred sites are also hot spots of conflict the high incidence no coincidence land caregivers up against corporate government might corporate media tries to keep it out of sight Standing Rock is not an isolated case numerous examples all over the place as part of our plan time for us to acknowledge and understand that indigenous caretakers know how to take care of and regenerate the land so important to humbly accept the indigenous knowledge in this regard therefore we need to also safeguard the care givers of these natural places their protection is necessary for protection of entire planet we have tried to control manipulate ,dominate , exploit the earth largely for economic gain destablising life and eco systems so called technological advancement is the usual corporate refrain this attitude of domination this brutality to earth has been reflected in humans and resultant diseases causing us consternation we should think not just of how we can put ourselves in good health but also how do we put the land in good health understanding what is the true source of our wealth as franz fannon clears our mental fog we refuse to be just another cog in a machinery intent on brutality to earth not understanding the true value of what life is worth we need to decolonise the apocalyptic ending storyline because the end is part of the future .

It was 4 am with a cool Ugandan night wind in our open air recording space i was watching kabaka recording a verse. he stood directly between the microphone stand and a big Free West Papua poster designed by Dubdem. he kept repeating this line: " a sonic intervention almost like a blur". Each time he did a take he put extra emphasis on that last word: “Blur” At first, i was very puzzled. Some months later, i was having a conversation with a Masaai sistren nkina, and she said to me, “You told me of your Haitian filmmaker friend Michelangelo Quay who attended a gathering of ancient spiritual practitioners in the forest of Gabon. He learnt that when someone in the gathering had a dream or vision, they wouldnt use the words “Dream” or “vision.” they would simply say , " I see this..." Because such experiences were just a part of the natural flow of life. The sistren said, “I know you and I have been joking about how you learnt about Masaai traditional values. Did I tell you this before through a dream ? because I dont remember telling you in a day to day conversation. are we in a dream now?” At that very instant, my mind returned to the recording session and the word that Kabaka repeated like a chant. “Blur” and suddenly i realized, why that word was so important to a recording session that produced so many lyrics that touched on the future in a prophetic way. IR Sonic Interventions & Indigenous Resistance was first broadcast on 18th July 2020, on Raskattas Radio, based in Sofia, Bulgaria. It featured IR ::Sankara Future Dub Resurgence, Dhangsha and Dub Sisters Mapu, Apachita and Esaete. For those who listened in, it was like an exhilarating live gig - raw in sound and text with punk attitude, but disciplined like a Peoples' Army on manoeuvres - everyone jumping in to take the baton then passing it on - everyone looking out for everyone else.

This is what happens when sonic experimentation and co-operation moves music and text beyond current convention. The political commentary and degree of analysis demonstrated a depth that is missing from present day dub, but not at the expense of dance propulsion. Bob Marley and his contemporaries created a framework of militant poetry with which to uplift the spirits of oppressed people. But over forty years on, it is not enough to merely REPRODUCE that template.

As Sankara FDR say: “this is no photocopy dub.” Aside from spoken testimonies, the session was comprised of field recordings in locations such as Chile, Colombia& Uganda , acoustic rhythms and melodies and uncompromising programmed sequences. It was assembled using a variety of techniques: post-punk cut & paste, dub mixology and live electronic improvisation. This was in fact an ‘alternative news broadcast,’ unashamedly betraying a robust anti-colonial perspective. It was on THAT level.
